Skill, Performance, and Movement

When you have someone who plays a position well, that is skill.

When you have someone who hits markers well, like a broad jump, that is performance. They are using their energy systems and body mechanics to produce an output we can measure qualitatively; the caveat is that this does not tell us whether they did it right, only that they hit a number.

The two factors above tell us how well you will do in your chosen field, but they do not tell us how durable you are.

Movement is what tells us how durable you are. If you can move well, meaning a great score in a movement screen, that tells us that you have enough movement capacity to support your performance, energy systems, and muscular system output.

If, however, your movement base is lacking, you will have more power than you have mobility, and that’s a recipe for disaster. This is blowing a ligament without contact from an external force due to being overpowered relative to your capacity to stabilize and orient yourself; in other words, you can drive yourself so hard/fast that you go outside your biomechanics.

A parallel to this would be the yoga practitioner who never lifts a weight; they would likely have great mobility, but lack the power and strength to manipulate load and maintain stability in loaded performance or skill tasks. They would be underpowered relative to their capacity, in that they have a greater range of movement than they can control, and so are also at risk of injury.

The point is that performance and skill do not equal durability; they just equal performance and skill, and before anything else, you want an optimal movement screen to ensure that you are not building on dysfunction.

To recap: Fitness is a poor predictor of durability; it can only predict performance. Movement capacity is the predictor for durability.  If, for example, you need more power in your glutes and you focus on glute exercises for power, but you lack hip extension, then all that work will translate into nothing but risk unless you gain the additional motion first.

It’s up to you, or preferably a Functional Movement Specialist (FMS), to figure out the bottleneck.
