Paper Tigers & Hollow Threats

Every position is a system of levers that only works if each lever connects to the next for a reason. Not "did they tap," but "was there a reason for every piece to be where it was?"

A real threat is a system. A paper tiger is a collection of pieces that happened to land in the right shape at the right time.

1. Does it track you?

Real threats build dynamically, adjusting to your reactions to solve the problem as it changes. You'll feel control tighten exactly where you're trying to create space, and loosen where it's no longer needed.

A paper tiger doesn't track. It stays static while you shift, or gets cranked harder instead of adjusting to where you actually went. Where a real threat has no lag, a hollow one is always half a beat behind, compensating with force instead of correction.

2. How many things are being controlled at once?

A real threat is 3-D. It's controlling the primary leg, but it's also aware of the secondary leg, your hips, the escape route it's actively closing. You feel it as fractional, constant adjustments everywhere, as they track multiple variables at once.

A hollow threat is 2-D. The tell is what's not being controlled; if you can move your free leg, shift your hips, build a frame, and nothing on the other end responds, you know it's tracking one thing only and nothing else.

3. The effort signature.

A hollow threat has to be forced; heaving to manufacture pressure the position itself isn't generating.

A real threat, in contrast, feels almost effortless; the mechanics do the work muscle would otherwise do. Feeling someone strain against a position that shouldn't require straining is a telltale sign of compensation. And compensation isn't harmless: enough brute force will make even a flawed technique dangerous. But against a capable defense, that same force fails far more often than it succeeds.

The Read:

It's a live diagnostic, run entirely by feel: Does the pressure track your movement, or lag behind? Is control spread across the whole position, or just focused on the primary limb? Is the position held calmly, or faked with white-knuckle effort?
